Combat is integral to Nodeka. Battling mobs and other players is the most common way to gather gold, experience, and items. Being in combat is sometimes referred to as "fighting".

From the helpfile:

Basic combat:

Some basic combat commands are:

consider - gives basic feedback on how powerful your opponent is compared
to you. Use this feedback cautiously, it is not 100% reliable

assist - attempts to join another player in combat (to give aid)
join - attempts to join another player in combat (to give aid)

kill - attempts to attack a player or a mob (see 'help mob') if
successful, battle will be initiated and it will last until
either you or your opponent is dead (if the battle is
uninterrupted)

flee - attempts to run away from a battle (can only be used in battle)

murder - attempts to attack a player ONLY. This is very useful when you
are trying to attack a player that has a mob (see 'help mob')

recall - attempts to teleport back home (see 'help home')

For more information about combat, see help on any of the commands above and
see help on 'skills' and 'spells'. For example:

Class Description
The barbarian is the most base combat class. From "help barbarian:"

Bararian [sic], also known as ruanbaere:

When one speaks of the mighty ruanbaere, there is but one consistency in all
words spoken: there is no force more devastating. A different breed of fighter,
the ruan philosophy in battle is fairly simple: if it moves, hit it, and hit it
as hard as possible. The ruanbaere believes in the "right of might" way
of combat, and seeks to rid themselves of their enemy as fast as possible by
simply beating them into submission.

From an early age, these warriors are taught how to focus their anger into
controlling their weapons. To make the weapons a pure extension of their
rage. And to use that rage to leave little more than a bloody smear where
their opponents once stood.

Forgoing skill and subtlety in battle, the ruanbaeres are brawlers of the
truest sense, which quite possibly is what makes them the most dangerous.
There is no possible way to tell what these crazed warriors will do in combat,
no way to guess what is coming next, no way to form a defensive battle plan.
Once you you're sure what's coming next, you've already lost, because even
the ruanbaere has no idea what it's going to do.

*Note: yes, the help file spells "barbarian" wrong in the first line.

From the helpfile:

Endurance is your energy or stamina remaining. Almost every skill requires
at least some portion of endurance to use and using basic movement commands
like north, east, south, west, up or down almost always
drain endurance points.

Agility is the main factor in regenerating endurance.

Endurance also affects your damage and accuracy in battle. If your current
endurance is low, you may suffer a damage and hit penalty. If your current
endurance is high, you may gain a damage and hit bonus (fighters only).

The penalty algorithm for endurance affects in combat is as follows:

bonus = 10 + log(maximum endurance * maximum endurance)
threshold = (maximum endurance * (50 - bonus)) / 100

if (current endurance < threshold)
{
percent = current endurance / threshold
if (percent < 0.75) percent = 0.75
hit = hit * percent
dam = dam * percent
}

Here are some examples of the endurance penalty algorithm:

Example #1: Decreased damage at 30% endurance with 1000 endurance

Nijlo has 1000 maximum endurance and 300 current endurance.
Nijlo has 100 hit and 100 dam.

bonus = 10 + log(1000 * 1000) = 16
threshold = (1000 * (50 - 16)) / 100 = 1000 * .34 = 340

if (300 < 340)
{
percent = 300 / 340 = .88
hit = 100 * .88 = 88
dam = 100 * .88 = 88
}

Example #2: Decreased damage at 30% endurance with 10,000 endurance

Nijlo has 10,000 maximum endurance and 3000 current endurance.
Nijlo has 100 hit and 100 damage/dam.

bonus = 10 + log(10000 * 10000) = 18
threshold = (10000 * (50 - 18)) / 100 = 10000 * .32 = 3200

if (3000 < 3200)
{
percent = 3000 / 3200 = .94
hit = 100 * .94 = 94
dam = 100 * .94 = 94
}

The bonus algorithm for endurance only benefits fighters. It is as follows:

bonus = log(maximum endurance * maximum endurance)
threshold = (maximum endurance * (100 - bonus)) / 100

if (current endurance > threshold)
{
percent = current endurance / threshold
if (percent > 1.15) percent = 1.15
hit = hit * percent
dam = dam * percent
}

Here are some examples of the endurance bonus algorithm:

Example #1: Increased damage at 100% endurance with 1000 endurance

Nijlo has 1000 maximum endurance and 1000 current endurance.
Nijlo has 100 hit and 100 dam.

bonus = log(1000 * 1000) = 6
threshold = (1000 * (100 - 6)) / 100 = 1000 * .94 = 940

if (1000 > 940)
{
percent = 1000 / 940 = 1.06
hit = 100 * 1.06 = 106
dam = 100 * 1.06 = 106
}

Example #2: Increased damage at 100% endurance with 10,000 endurance

Nijlo has 10,000 maximum endurance and 10,000 current endurance.
Nijlo has 100 hit and 100 dam.

bonus = log(10000 * 10000) = 8
threshold = (1000 * (100 - 8)) / 100 = 1000 * .92 = 9200

if (10000 > 9200)
{
percent = 10000 / 9200 = 1.09
hit = 100 * 1.09 = 109
dam = 100 * 1.09 = 109
}

The above algorithm is logrithmic. This means as you grow in endurance, the
benefit you receive from the added endurance decreases.

However, as shown above, the greater your total endurance, the greater the
greater the threshold you have for reduced endurance. In both above examples
when Nijlo is losing damage he has 30% of his total endurance.

However, in the first example, he loses 12% of his damage and hit. In the
second example, he loses only 6% of his damage and hit. This is because the
algorithm has greater benefit for those who have higher endurance totals.

Nijlo has 100% endurance in both cases of bonus damage. In the first example,
he gains 6% damage/hit. In the second example, he gains 9% damage/hit. This
further solidifies the point that a higher endurance maximum helps gain more
damage.

The maximum damage/hit penalty is -25%. The maximum damage/hit bonus is +15%.

Finally, new players with very low damage and hit are free of suffering
endurance penalties. However, they are granted favor of increased damage from
endurance bonuses.
Usage: insanity (when already in battle, this ability will automatically target
your opponent if no target is supplied)

Insanity is the true measure of a ruanbaere. This skill requires massive
exertion on the part of the ruanbaere to work up the fever, and drains more
endurance from the user with each attempted attack. In addition to the huge
cost in endurance, the ruanbaere can do little else but ride out the fever of
insanity. While the cost may seem great indeed, and dangerous, the sight of an
insane ruanbaere will send even the most seasoned warrior into flight.

The benefits of insanity are three fold. Much like berserk, the ruanbaere most
powerful skill's most noticeable effect is the increase in damage it brings.
The stronger the ruanbaere, the more damaging his blows will be. Another
effect, for the older, more experienced ruanbaere, is an increase in his
ability to land attacks while insane. The greater the power of his mind, and
the more experience he has, the more the ruanbaere will be able to control his
body while in the throws of insanity. Finally, the power behind an attack from
a ruanbaere under the effects of insanity make it impossible to parry the
blows.

When working himself into the fever of insanity, the ruanbaere's fortitude is
compared to that of his target. The stauncher the target, the harder it is for
the insanity to affect him. Some say this is because the ruanbaere actually
makes his target somewhat insane when he attempts to enter the fever, and the
more robust the target the harder it is to affect him.

Note that there is a defensive drawback to insanity - an insane barbarian is
easier to hit.

Mastery of this skill beyond 100% improves insanity in two important ways:
1) The damage benefit of insanity is improved with greater mastery.
2) With enough mastery, insanity's endurance drain can be reduced.
when they manage the killing blow on a target, they receive greater benefit
than others due to their ruinous personas.

The experience and gold received by this ability is based on the killed NPC's
current gold and experience worth. This ability improves automatically.

To turn the output of barbarian bloodlust off, simply toggle reminders.
Bulwark is a defensive skill that grants health and some physical invulnerability while reducing damage. Its effect is mostly determined by willpower. Skill mastery increases its effect and reduces its prevention time.

From the helpfile:

Usage: bulwark

Bulwark is a forge feat prevention ability.

The mighty ruanbaere has long had a reputation for being single-minded,
stubborn, and thick-headed beyond comprehension. (Graciousness is
certainly a trait they possess as well, for any barbarian will thank you
sincerely for lavishing such compliments upon him.)

From this steel-plated obstinance springs forth a basic tool in the
successful barbarian's arsenal - the skill of bulwark. Upon using this
skill, the barbarian roots both mind and body firmly in place, steeling
himself to be the most unyielding lump of flesh he can possibly be.

This restricted stance yields a slight disadvantage; the barbarian's
damage is lowered somewhat while he is in bulwark. However, he also
becomes harder to kill and more resilient to simple knives and clubs;
the user instantly gains a boost to hit points as well as a small
measure of pure physical invulnerability.

The timely use of bulwark has saved many an overextended barbarian,
and its hit point boost can be a welcome salve to the wounds of
extended battle. Note, however, that a barbarian who is berserking
or insane does not have the presence of mind to initiate this
ability - it must be used beforehand or not at all.

The power of bulwark is based on the user's willpower; its duration is
constant. Bulwark's prevention is short but cannot be reduced by stats
alone. Mastery in this ability beyond 100% increases its power further,
and can slightly reduce its prevention as well.
Rolling elbow is a lagless damaging attack prevention skill. Its damage scales mostly with strength and skill mastery, though dexterity also plays a role. Its prevention time is reduced by constitution. Here's an example with ~450 strength, ~370 dexterity, ~400 constitution, and ~340 +Dam at 100% skill mastery:

Your fist and rolling elbow SUNDER (1532) a terrible wight!!

hand form - intermediate skill (00:55)

From the helpfile:

Usage: rolling elbow <target>
Usage: rolling elbow (when already in battle, this ability will automatically target your opponent if no target is supplied)

Rolling elbow is an intermediate hand form prevention ability.

The attack performed hits the target with the fist and then rolls that attack
from the fist, into the elbow. This leads to a most damaging attack.

The damage done by rolling elbow is mostly controlled by the user's strength,
although a small portion is also incurred by the user's dexterity. The accuracy
of rolling elbow is based on the user's level and dexterity.

Rolling elbow can be performed while the user is under any condition. Like for
example, when the user is insane.

The prevention time incurred by rolling elbow may seem a bit drastic to those
with low constitution. However, for those with high constitution the prevention
time incurred by rolling elbow could not be lower.

It has been rumored that this ability improves in power for users who exceed
100% ability mastery.
