A character can transition to the resting position from the standing position by using the "rest" command.
A character can transition to the resting position from the sleeping position by having another character use the "wake" command on them.
A character can transition to the resting position from combat by being killed.
From the helpfile:
Usage: rest Resting will regain lost endurance, health, and so forth at an increased rate. Resting will not regain lost pool points as fast as sleeping, but an advantage of resting over sleeping is seeing actions happening in the room you are resting in. When you are sleeping, you lose this advantage. In addition, while you are resting you cannot be pulled by those who you are following. Often times this is needed.
