Here is the in-game help file for Invasion Mechanics. Note that these mechanics may not be the most up-to-date, as help files in general can have errors.

Invasion mechanics:

The information in this helpfile is for players who are well-acquainted
with the Invasion event, and are looking for more information about its
inner workings.

While the mechanics of the Invasion itself is complex, your role tends
to be straightforward - for the best reward, simply follow Christof's
instructions, successfully complete all of the missions assigned to you,
and minimize the damage dealt to Ruushi. Both your platinum and your
faction rewards are strongly dependent on both your contribution (how
much effort you put into defending Ruushi) and Ruushi's final damage
score.

The following tips may help to maximize the defenders' success:

- Keep careful track of your heroism runes - the spellbinders are
eager and will quickly capture you if you slip up in any way. See
'help invasion slave pits' for information on what will allow a
  spellbinder to capture you.

- Golems serve two purposes. Defending a golem long enough for it to
establish an initial repair site helps to reinforce Ruushi instantly,
reducing the city's damage. However, even after their initial mission
is complete, golems can repair very significant amounts of damage to
Ruushi over time! Defending them can be tough (the rescue skill can't
be used on non-follower NPCs), so enlisting the help of other players
can be a big help. (Keep in mind that players in a larger size bracket
  cannot interfere with weaker invaders.)

- Shamans are a minor nuisance in small quantities, but if ignored until
their numbers build up, their quakes can be devastating to the city.
Tyf's devices can reveal them, but only for a few short minutes, so
all available defenders should be ready to act swiftly.

- While the death of the Invasion boss is the greatest faction-boosting
factor for the defending group, warlock assassination missions can
provide a strong faction boost as well. The more warlocks the defenders
manage to eliminate, the greater the potential faction bonus for all.
It is the warlocks that shield the leaders, so if the warlock missions
go very poorly, the Invasion leader may not be exposed at all.

- The boss encounters scale down for small defending forces; if there
are only a few players defending Ruushi, the Invasion leader will be
weaker than if there were a large number of defenders.
